Deconstructing Cisnormativity: RE-VIEWING THE GAZE

Project Outline

This project intends to re-evaluate how Gender, Sex, and Sexuality are perceived, developing the discussion surrounding the effect of binarism on sociological welfare. Critiquing the method in which we Gaze, this work invites viewers to participate with the imagery presented. Drawing upon Anaglyph design, the project pushes the boundaries of contemporary photography to expand the viewer–artwork relationship.

Structure and Design

Formulated within the Fine Art exhibition structure, this project is realised through facilitation of participatory exhibition design. Constructed with the purpose to invite Cisnormative attendees to review their instinctual gaze.

Established through an exhibition which requests the viewer to walk through the artwork display twice. First by inspecting each interwoven visualisation of Gender, Sex, and Sexuality, and then again by adorning red-tinted glasses or camera lenses to peer through the multifaceted design of identity.

Supplementary Catalogue

To accompany the exhibited artwork, a Fine Art Catalogue was established with granted the viewer additional context to the project’s intent. Enabling the Cisnormative to both reflect upon their visual identifiers, as well as the way they define terminology is fundamental in facilitating the tools to Deconstruct Cisnormativity.

Each concept of Gender, Sex, and Sexuality as they are approached, are facilitated within boundary linguistic framings of the terms visualised. Employing the same Anaglyph Design utilised within the artwork.

Viewer Participation

Due to the critical nature of facilitating modes of viewer-artwork participation, this project offers varying degrees of opportunity to engage yourself. Alongside the supplied exhibition materials, online interfaces were established to allow individuals who cannot attend the exhibition. These features include: a Virtual Tour, Portfolio Gallery, and Camera Filter. You can use these to step into this project’s digital footprint and engage yourself with the research and sociological debate surrounding Deconstructing Cisnormativity.

Please feel free to watch the video to see how to engage with the Virtual Tour and Portfolio Gallery; also take full advantage with the Camera Filter on your phone to see the affects in real time.
