As a UX designer, I aim to apply my skills and pragmatic mindset to improve the quality of life for individuals overwhelmed by trends, fostering harmony between people, technology, and business.
Freeland connects early-stage freelancers with local peers and businesses through online matching and offline events, providing timely information and resources. This platform empowers freelancers to gain confidence and achieve success in their careers.
Recognising the rise of the gig economy and the Sustainable Development Goal of promoting decent work for all, I identified a gap in organisational support that exposes freelancers to precarious work environments, leading to burnout, isolation, and financial challenges.
To deeply understand users, I engaged with seven freelancers through semi-structured interviews and conducted a diary study with three of them. Five participants had less than two years of freelancing experience, while two had over three years.
During the discovery phase, I initially developed personas, key insights, and a UX vision. With further research and online ethnography, I refined these definitions and established four design principles to guide the vision.
While generating the concept, I involved a broad range of participants in co-design sessions and experience prototyping, continuously iterating on my ideas using storyboards and interactive prototypes to uncover practical and meaningful solutions.
By visualising their skills as a skill tree, freelancers can identify their strengths and areas for improvement, while the two views of the requirement tree help break down information barriers. Freeland empowers them to take control of their career paths.
Freeland simplifies the process of connecting with others, whether freelancers are looking for peers with similar skills, complementary collaborators, inspiring guides, or want to cold pitch to more businesses. Our platform brings them into rich opportunities and networks.
Freeland provides access to diverse offline events by organising meetups, socials, and community projects, while also gathering information on local conferences. Additionally, we facilitate in-person meetings at local spaces. All of these ensure freelancers have effective, real-world opportunities to connect.
With platform-based advisors, our resource centre provides comprehensive support on legal, financial, and other matters. We also encourage mutual assistance among local freelancers. All of these ensure freelancers receive the support and resources to thrive.
