Final Project
SALANCE: An Uneven Shoulder Detection Device
Problem identification
Sedentary lifestyle Being sedentary is common among office workers, students, and other groups. Maintaining an incorrect posture for too long can lead to a range of problems.
Scoliosis & other musculoskeletal disorders An unbalanced posture can lead to uneven stress on the body’s skeletal muscles, which can cause scoliosis, pelvic tilt, and other symptoms.
Uneven shoulder Most uneven shoulders are caused by these symptoms, which can lead to further potential disorders if not corrected.
Concept
In response to the existing problem, I want to design a device that can detect shoulder imbalance in real time and with an alert function, which will help users to maintain good posture as much as possible when they are sedentary, and avoid causing more posture problems and musculoskeletal disorders.
After brainstorming and analysing the various ideas, the neckband option was chosen. The Neckband device can provide a high-quality user experience by being easy to wear, fitting naturally on the shoulder, combining real-time sensor detection and vibration feedback for uneven shoulder problems.
Prototyping
A series of prototypes were developed to test form, function, interactivity and wearing comfort. The final prototype was delivered with different vibration modes that can detect the shoulder tilt angle in real time and view the data on a mobile phone through Bluetooth.

ABOUT SALANCE This product detects the user’s shoulder tilt angle through sensors and alerts the user through the vibration motors on both sides. The multi-tested appearance and the silicone connectors in the middle make the product comfortable and stable to be worn. Users can check the shoulder tilt data through mobile phone and set personalised vibration mode and detection method. By leveraging AI and analysing users’ daily usage habits, future software updates will provide more comprehensive health data analysis and customised suggestions.
